Three Key Facts:
- Project Investment: $200 million to repower Twin Ridges Wind Farm.
- Energy Output: +139MW, enough to power 45,000 homes/year.
- Job Creation: 150 union construction jobs.
In a transformative move for Pennsylvania’s renewable energy future, Exus Renewables has announced a $200 million investment to upgrade older turbines with newer, more efficient energy-generating components at its Twin Ridges Wind Farm. The upgrade will boost its wind energy production by 30%.
Wind turbines, like all mechanical systems, degrade over time, leading to more frequent outages and reduced productivity. By replacing outdated turbines with modern technology, Exus is extending the operational life of the facility and qualifying it for significant tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act.The farm’s wind turbines can produce up to 139 megawatts of power – enough to power more than 45,000 homes.
Jim Spencer, CEO of Exus Renewables North America emphasized the impact of the investment, stating, “Thanks to these upgrades, the Twin Ridges project will generate clean, reliable and renewable power — and millions in community investment — to the region for decades to come.”
Addressing Challenges with Clean Energy Innovation
Pennsylvania is embracing wind energy as a cleaner, sustainable replacement for coal mining, which once dominated the region’s economy. The Twin Ridges project will generate 150 union construction jobs. Over its lifetime, the upgraded Twin Ridges Wind Farm will generate $100 million in local taxes and land payments.
The project represents a turning point for Bedford and Somerset counties, areas historically reliant on coal mining. For decades, these communities faced economic uncertainty as the demand for coal declined. By repowering Twin Ridges, Exus is providing a new economic foundation while actively reducing carbon emissions.
Wind power is a sustainable resource that aligns with Pennsylvania’s broader environmental goals. This initiative showcases how federal incentives are driving private investment and building a cleaner, more resilient energy grid.
Growing Market Demand for Clean Energy
Demand for clean energy generation has accelerated in recent years – thanks to Joe Biden’s clean energy plan and Pennsylvania’s renewable energy goals, so the time is right for upgrading the wind farm’s equipment. While parts of the nation’s electric grid are too congested to support new projects, much of the transmission infrastructure built for existing wind farms may be underutilized as those farms operate below peak capacity.
With over $18 billion already invested in Pennsylvania’s clean energy economy under the Biden-Harris Administration, the Twin Ridges Wind Farm underscores a broader commitment to equity and sustainability.President Biden’s clean energy plan has widespread support across Pennsylvania. One recent survey shows that nearly 80% of Pennsylvanians support renewable energy expansion and more than seven out of 10 voters support the Inflation Reduction Act.
